The Conservative UK Government has announced an additional £1 billion for pupils in England to catch up on time missed in class because of the lockdown.
Suzy Davies MS – the Shadow Education Minister in the Welsh Parliament – commented:
“After the serious concerns raised yesterday that Wales’s children were getting less teaching time during lockdown than their UK peers, this is very welcome news.
“This money will, of course, help all children in the UK start catching up with the tuition they’ve lost. With Wales already behind, we need to know that the Minister will use the full Barnett consequential – at least – to remove a further disadvantage.
“Let’s remember that, despite some world class teachers, Wales is already struggling to keep up with the rest of the UK when it comes to PISA results, so the last thing our pupils need is another rung pulled out from under them.”
