Commenting on a school report that pupils need more mental health support, the Shadow Minister for Education, Suzy Davies MS, said:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted just how important it is to support mental health.
“The last few months have been both uncertain and unusual for our pupils, so it should not come as a huge surprise that many have felt anxieties with school work and other issues both in and out of school.
“It’s not as if children’s mental health hasn’t been raised repeatedly with Welsh Government. The pace and focus on the recommendations of the Senedd’s “Mind Over Matter” report have been underwhelming leaving some children and young people less able to cope with heightened worries about being behind with school work or the health of friends and family.
“This has to be the shove Welsh Government needs to grasping an undoubtedly complex challenge. The effects of the unmet mental health needs of our children and young people will continue to be profound long after Covid if they don’t.”
